Set to be executed for failing to keep his promise Dobbins sought out his friend, British Colonel Robert Nichols for protection. On that day, Erie’s Daniel Dobbins was captured by British forces and paroled on the promise that he would “not take up arms against the crown.” One month later, on August 16, 1812, Dobbins was captured yet again when General William Hull surrendered Fort Detroit to British forces. This war, based heavily on the right to free trade, commenced with blow after blow to American morale.Īs for Erie, however, the story really begins with the fall of Fort Mackinac on July 17, 1812. In June 1812, amid a global conflict between the United Kingdom and France, the United States declared war on the former, citing displeasure with years of harassments on the high seas from the British - in particular. Her legacy, however, is one which stretches back to the early days of American history. During the summer, however, she switches gears and sets sail as a training school vessel - teaching future generations of sailors and lovers of the water alike, the basics of square-rigged seamanship. Today, the Brig is the Erie Maritime Museum’s largest exhibit however, she is not tied permanently to the pier.
